At the US Open day games yesterday, my friend Riza and I saw the crowd-favorite wonder twins, Bryan brothers lose in a close doubles match. No chest- bumping for them this time. We also saw part of the Novak Djokovic vs. Fernando Verdasco match and witnessed the crowd going wild each time Djokovic got a point. Apparently, because he invited McEnroe to hit a few balls with him after his match yesterday, he was a NY crowd favorite. During the match, we walked up to the top of the Arthur Ashe stadium and peered over to see the Louis Armstrong stadium where Venus and Serena Williams won a doubles match. And, with some good binoculars, I could actually see their faces.
We didn’t have tickets for the night games, but sat at an outdoor wine bar just outside of Arthur Ashe stadium in front of the big screens and stayed for the Melanie Oudin vs. Caroline Wozniacki match. The crowd-favorite Oudin gave into her nerves and lost to Wozniacki who was asked earlier, “how are you going to face a crowd that’s against you” and Wozniacki gracefully replied that “they are not against me, but are for Oudin.” Well she showed them. After spending 12 hours at the US Open yesterday, I realized how much of a tennis geek I really am. It’s the one sport that I actually like to watch on TV, let alone up close and in person.
